That the crowd who thinks the Christian right are the town elders in Footloose are the new town elders but without a confession booth or path to redemption. And it's not just dancing they hate, they hate anyone who doesn't tow the line on speech and even taste and intend to ostracize them.
It will be self correcting. Since we are all morally and psychologically flawed, systems of ethics that have a path to redemption will become enormously attractive to all but those who are in complete denial of their own weaknesses. And they will in fact become marginalized as they are exposed as hypocrites of bad faith.
